Carbondale students take on domestic violence

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

It is a topic that's hard for many to talk about domestic abuse well some Carbondale 6th graders have been tackling the issue head-on.

Carbondale Middle School students will be heading to our nation's Capitol on Sunday to compete for top honors at National History Day.

The kids worked with the Women's Center in Carbondale to learn more about their topic "Rejection to Recognition: Domestic Violence in Illinois."

They tell us domestic abuse is something that needs to be talked out more to prevent it from happening.

"Hopefully that they shouldn't keep quiet about the issue and if they know someone who has been abused or domestic violence victim, they should go to the police or go to someone for help," said Elizabeth Budslick, a student."

"They need to know about this is wrong at a young age so they are prepared so when they see the signs of it," said Betsy Brown, teacher.

The competition takes place on the University of Maryland campus near Washington D.C.
