JEFFERSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

A Mount Vernon, Illinois man is dead after being hit by a train late Saturday morning.

It happened on the Union Pacific Railroad track and bridge running across Atchison Creek.  According to Sheriff Roger Mulch, it was 100 yards north of Adams Road in rural Jefferson County, Illinois.

According to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, they received a 911 call that a person was struck by a train and fell in the water.

Deputies found Dominique Dontez McCrae lying in Atchison Creek near the railroad bridge.

Sheriff Mulch says an investigation revealed that McCrae was fishing with family members. And, McCrae was standing on the tracks fishing off of the bridge.

As a northbound Union Pacific train approached, McCrae ran south on the track trying to get off the bridge before the train arrived. He was struck about the center-way of the bridge and knocked over the railing into the water.

McCrae's body was retrieved and he was pronounced dead on the scene by a Jefferson County Deputy Coroner.

Sheriff Mulch says no foul play is suspected in this unfortunate accident.

An investigation continues by the sheriff's office, Union Pacific Railroad and the Jefferson County Coroner's Office.
