MARION, IL (KFVS) -

Marion police are stepping up patrols after a neighborhood becomes the location for a string of break-ins.

"I didn't even think about turning the porch light on, I didn't think about anything I just walked outside."

When a Marion teen, who wishes to not be identified, walked to her car to grab a DVD Sunday night, she never thought she would soon come face to face with an attacker.

"He grabbed me on both shoulders, he spun me around, he hit me, when I fell I hit my face, and when my dog up in that widow started barking and everything else and then the guy was bent over me, and I guess when my dog started barking it scared him and he jumped off the porch and left," she says.

Leaving her frightened and with this mark on her face.

Because it was dark, and the person was covered in black-she wasn't able to make out his face.

Marion police say this incident along Central Street and another break in on Tuesday led them to step up patrols.

"We are just trying to address concerns of the neighbors out there," says Police Chief John Eibeck.

There was also a break-in involving a knife-just blocks away from Sunday's incident.

"Nothing was taken, he demanded cash drugs and jewelry none of which she had, she struggled with the intruder, she was able to break free and yell for help, went to neighbors and called 911," he says.

Right now police are investigating both crimes-but can't say if they are connected.

They're asking neighbors to be more aware.

"Somebody looks out of place in the neighborhood or somebody they haven't seen or they are acting suspicious give us a call and let us check it out," he says.

And take precautions.

"My mom went out and bought wasp spray so it's by every door; my dad went and bought me pepper spray. I mean it has definitely changed the way we look at things," says the victim.
