Herrin church being plagued by vandals

Posted: Updated:

The Harvest Time Worship Center in Herrin can't seem to escape being vandalized.

Most recently the church's air conditioning unit was ripped open and all the copper tubing stolen.

And over the past several weeks vandals have spray painted the church walls and storage shed with symbols and other graffiti.

"My thoughts are that I think they're terrible, and it's just awful, "said Joe Montith. "We live here, people go to church here and they don't want to see that stuff."

The church has covered some of the graffiti. But the vandals have also been cutting holes in  the window screens of the church.

They've installed an alarm system after the church door was kicked in and several computers stolen last year.

"I go to church up here on 16th Street, I sure wouldn't want anybody to be vandalizing my church," said Montith.

Some neighbors say their homes have also been targeted by the spray-painting vandals.  And their homes burglarized.

"I really think it's terrible," said Brenda Stircklin. "And I really think the police ought to check this area more often. Because the house across the street it's empty. And the lady who owns it has had windows broken out and everything else. And the police never catch anybody."

If you have any information about the vandalism at Harvest Time Worship Center located at South 17th and East Grant streets in Herrin, please contact the Herrin Police Department.
