ST. CLAIR COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

The Saint Clair County coroner says a 46-year-old man was killed when he was hit by an Illinois State Police vehicle transporting a prisoner.

The victim was out of his vehicle at the time.

A state police spokesperson said the trooper didn't see the man on Illinois 159 southbound, 579 feet north of Emerald Terrace.

It happened around 1:24 a.m. The trooper was driving an arrestee to St. Clair County Jail for DUI processing under the posted speed limit and approached a group of eight to 10 illegally parked truck tractor semi-trailer with other pedestrians congregating around the parked vehicles.

It is unclear at this time how one of the pedestrians was positioned in front of the Trooper's vehicle. Based on witness statements, the pedestrian was running in the southbound lanes of traffic near the center dotted line.

The pedestrian was pronounced at the scene and the matter remains under investigation.

No agency has released the trooper's name.
