CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The students at Alma Schrader Elementary School in Cape Girardeau gave a Heartland soldier a special homecoming.

"It's great to have the support, it feels pretty good that they take time out of their day for us, that's awesome," said Spc. David Vaughn.

Vaughn returned home to the Heartland after serving overseas for almost a year.

He reunited with his wife and young daughter, and then together surprised his kindergarten son, Logan, Monday morning at school.

Logan Vaughn said he missed his dad "a lot" and it's "great" to have him home.

"I just miss being with him, seeing him every day is awesome," said Spc. Vaughn.

"You are a hero, we're so glad to have you home," announced Principal Ruth Ann Orr.

Even though the entire school helped welcome Vaughn home, Logan said he was surprised to see his dad.

"I had no idea," said Logan Vaughn.

Vaughn said he's glad to be back for his family.

"I think her and the kids have it way worse than we had it, we had to get up and do one job everyday they have to go through life every day," said Spc. Vaughn.

"The holidays, we expected that, but him not being home every day and stuff like that, just the everyday things, you miss a lot, all those small things," said wife and mother Tricia Vaughn.

"The only thing that's important is that you're home," said Logan Vaughn.

From the battle lines, to the lines of Alma Schrader children showing their thanks and gratitude, it's a special day for Specialist Vaughn.

"We're just happy," said Spc. Vaughn.

"No we're just excited and just like I love him," said Logan Vaughn.

"Excited that's right, a whole family again right, yup," said Spc. Vaughn.
