CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

A bill inspired by a Cape Girardeau family's heartache and hope for tomorrow is one-step closer to becoming law.

Sahara's law has now passed both the Missouri House and Senate.

It is in memory of 13-year-old Sahara Aldridge who died in 2007 after a long battle with a cancerous brain tumor.

Her parents, Amy and Shannon, wanted so desperately to keep their daughter's name alive, but to also help support cancer research at the same time.

Sahara's Law would allow Missouri taxpayers to donate at least a dollar of their state income tax refund to pediatric cancer research. The amount has to be at least two dollars on a combined return.

The House voted 137-0 in favor of the bill.

Sen. Wayne Wallingford sponsored the bill. It would go in effect on August 28.

It now moves to Governor Jay Nixon's desk for his signature.

The state treasurer would be required to distribute all money to the CureSearch for Children's Cancer fund.
