Hospitals, agencies team up for community health assessment

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Missouri cracked a top 10 list that no state wants to be on. According to a year long study, the Show-Me state is in the top nine most obese states.

Southeast Health and Saint Francis Medical Center teamed up for a community health assessment in several Heartland counties and looked at some of the most common health issues in the area.

Obesity, along with other diseases associated with being overweight like diabetes and hearth disease, topped the list.

"We think it's important that so many of the different agencies in the city offer a piece of the whole wellness pie," said Cape Girardeau Parks & Recreation Director Julia Thomson. "The city is certainly one of them and I think collectively together we can identify where our strengths and weaknesses are and where we're not meeting community needs and then offer up solutions that hopefully will help give everyone an opportunity to get fit and to improve their health and fitness levels."

The purpose of the study is to get people to live healthier lifestyles and make a positive impact on their health.
