CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - A nationwide Drug Take Back event took place on Saturday.

Dozens of locations in the Heartland participated in helping people get rid of any medications not needed in area households.

DEA Special Agent Larry Gregory says in Cape Girardeau, police have collected over 50 pounds of drugs in the hour they were out at the mall collecting.

In 2012, the totals peaked over 1,000 pounds from 14 different agencies in southeast Missouri. Gregory says every year the take back totals as well as awareness increases.

If you can't participate in today's program, check with your local authorities about where you may be able to dispose of your old medications.

Cape Girardeau and Jackson police departments are equipped with a drug drop off box in their police facility for convenience.
