CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - The Red Cross has launched new, free apps for your cell phone and they could save your life during the next threat of tornados.
The apps include a loud alert tone and are customizable for your location. You can set as many as you want and the phone will let you know when to take cover.
A total of five apps include: tornado, earthquake, hurricane, wild fire and first aid. Maggi Makins, a Red Cross volunteer, downloaded them in seconds to her phone.
Each app is unique and speaks to that emergency situation. The most popular around the Heartland: the tornado app.
As you download it, you can learn ways to prepare. It even has a flash light option built in.
The Earthquake app is also popular. Wherever you are with the app, it lets you know if that rumble you felt was indeed an earthquake.
Makins said she really likes the First Aid app. It tells you step-by-step what to do for all kinds of emergencies.
"Some things like that can really help until emergency help can be there," she said.
Beth Seabaugh, with the Red Cross also feels that app will be helpful.
"If it's a broke bone it takes you step-by-step through what to do." If 911 is needed either you just push a button or it will tell you to call 911."
Each app also tests your knowledge and then can post to Facebook to help spread the word.
Seabaugh said, "It helps give me piece of mind. We all know this area and weather is difficult to predict."
