CAPE GIRARDEAU (KFVS) -

Fire crews in Cape Girardeau battled early-morning flames at a home on the 400 block of Green Acres Street.

According to Battalion Chief Mark Starnes, the fire started in the carport area and spread to the attic. Family members noticed a fire in a storage room in the carport and called 911.

Starnes said they were called out at 2:27 a.m. and it took about 10 minutes to knock the flames down in the carport area.

He said they then took ceiling tiles and ripped them out from the inside to get to the fire and extinguish it.

The family is staying in a hotel for the night.

Starnes said they don't know the cause at this time, but believe it is not suspicious.
