CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Beginning May 1, all gas stations in Cape Girardeau will require gas purchases to be prepaid.
According to a press release from the city of Cape Girardeau, police recently set up a meeting with local fuel businesses to try and gauge just how big of an issue drive offs had become and to find a solution.
The city says those in attendance agreed that a prepaid policy was "the only way" to prevent losses associated with drive offs.
Reportedly, all merchants have agreed to voluntarily implement a prepaid policy.
According to Cape Girardeau Police officer Darin Hickey, all Cape Girardeau gas stations will comply with this policy and that the stations will only offer gas on a prepaid basis.
"We want to have more officers on the streets, this would be beneficial for the community," said Darin Hickey.
Hickey also says this policy only applies to gas stations within the city limits.
The police reportedly agree that losses due to drive offs are a big problem for the businesses, the customers and local police.
Police say they will help business owners design an ordinance that the businesses can eventually present to the city council.
