MURRAY, Ky. (KFVS/AP) - A Murray man who pleaded guilty but mentally ill to manslaughter in the stabbing death of his mother has been sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The Murray Ledger & Times reports Calloway County Circuit Judge Dennis Foust handed down the sentence on Friday to 34-year-old Michael Joseph Burke.

Burke had been originally charged with murder in the July 2012 attack on his mother, 55-year-old Karen McClellan, at his home.

The stabbing occurred on 13th Street in Murray, Ky.

Police say they found Karen McClellan, 55, stabbed to death after responding to a call that evening on July 9, 2012.

Police arrested McClellan's son, Michael Burke, 34, and charged him with murder.

He pleaded guilty but mentally ill to the charges on April 15, 2013 in a Calloway County courtroom.

According to his plea agreement, Burke must serve at least 85% of his sentence.
