Barkley Regional Airport gets word tower closure is pushed back

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) -

Barkley Regional Airport received word from the FAA that it will delay the closing of their traffic control tower until June 15.

There are 148 other towers have been slated to close, including a tower in southern Illinois.

An airport spokesperson says the FAA cited the reason for the delay is to allow the agency time to attempt to resolve multiple legal challenges to the closure decisions, which have been brought by airports and related stakeholders nationwide.

The Barkley spokesperson says it's the second revised date for the closure of the tower at Barkley. The tower was originally slated to close for April 7, then the date was moved May 5, before Friday's date was released.

"With each delay, we are hopeful that more action will be taken to prevent the tower from closing at all," said Airport Manager Richard Roof. "We have been monitoring and exploring the possibly of joining in the legal actions of other airports, but at the same time we are optimistic that it won't come to that."

Roof encourages anyone interested in joining the effort to keep the towers open to contact their congressional representative.
