Illinois man facing marijuana charges after traffic stop

CARMI, IL - (KFVS) - An East St. Louis man was jailed on drug charges after a traffic stop on Interstate 64 in rural White County on Thursday.

It happened shortly before 8 p.m. on Thursday, according to Illinois State Police (ISP) District 19 Commander, Captain Morrie Fraser.

Sherman Levelle Nicholson, Jr., 29, was charged with possession of cannabis (more than 30 grams, but less than 500 grams), a class 3 felony, and DUI – Drugs, a class A misdemeanor.

Nicholson was also issued a citation for speeding. He was taken to the White County Jail in Carmi, Illinois, where he was held pending a court appearance.

According to Captain Fraser, Nickelson's car reached speeds of 81 mph in a 65 mph zone on Interstate 64 at milepost 123 and he was stopped by police for speeding.

After stopping the car, a trooper smelled the odor of cannabis from inside the car.

After searching the vehicle, 468 grams of cannabis was found. Grayville Police Officer Sergeant Jess Burley and his K-9 Officer Tara assisted at the scene.
