A Poplar Bluff apartment was damaged by fire on Monday evening.

According to Poplar Bluff Fire Battalion Chief Carl Williams, the fire broke out at the building just before 5:30 p.m. at 520 Poplar Street.

He says the fire was caused by an electrical malfunction.

According to Williams, an exhaust fan in a bathroom caused a fire that spread throughout several rooms and onto the second floor.

Families from four units were affected by the blaze. The fire also caused smoke and water damage.

Terry Tomlinson, the owner of the building, says he got a call last night from a tenant that said smoke was present in the building. He rushed over and called the fire department. He also told tenants to vacate the building immediately.

Tomlinson says he helped an elderly man get out of the structure from the second floor.

Tomlinson also says that all the tenants have a place to stay. They will stay with family members or in a hotel that the Red Cross helped to provide.

Tomlinson says he just bought the apartment building last June and has put a lot of work into fixing the building.

There was a lot of furniture damaged in the fire, as well as the back side of the house suffered damage. Tomlinson doesn't know if he will rebuild at this time due to the extent of the damage.
