Evacuation lifted in Du Quoin after gas leak

The Du Quoin High School was evacuated Tuesday morning due to a gas leak that happened at the intersection of South Washington and Olive Street.

According to David Searby with the Perry County EMA, the evacuation order was lifted shortly before 2:30 p.m.

US 51 is now open in both directions, but is reduced to one lane between Adams and Olive for Ameren crews to finish repairs.

Superintendent Gary Kelly said students were released earlier to go home for the day.

Some were picked up at Weatley School Gym.

The gas line break was a couple of blocks from the school.

According to Du Quoin Emergency Services and Disaster Agency, those who live between Franklin St and from Mulbery St to Madison St were advised to stay in their homes with the windows closed during the leak.

Washington St/US51 was closed in both directions between at E Olive St.
