CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

If you logged onto a social media site like Facebook or Twitter on Tuesday, you probably saw some profile pictures are a red box with an equal sign.

Social media users adopted the symbol for the day to show support of same-sex marriage as the Supreme Court takes up the issue.

"I'm in favor of marriage equality being legalized," said Haley Lambert.

Lambert adopted the symbol for her profile picture to show her support for marriage equality.

"I just grew up with a lot of friends, and my twin sister who identify with the gay and lesbian, bi, transgender community...I just feel like it should be a non issue who they decide to be with and be committed to and have those marriage rights," said Lambert.

She said she wanted to show Facebook users another perspective to the argument.

"In the past, people have maybe put things on Facebook, my good friends and family members have put things on there that maybe I didn't agree with before and seeing that they were in favor of it, but the way that they portrayed it on there kind of convinced me otherwise, and so I was kind of hoping for the same thing to put it out there that I'm in favor so that someone could see a straight married woman who isn't a part of that community but who would like to see it legalized, for friends and family members," said Lambert.

Pastor Rodger Kiepe at Abbey Road Christian Church also supports the idea of same-sex marriage.

"More people are understanding that the things that make up our sexual orientation aren't just genitalia, there's hormones, there's all sorts of things," said Kiepe.

But not everyone supports the court taking up the issue.

"We believe marriage is of divine institution and not of human definition," said Catholic Priest Father David Hulshof.

Hulshof said there are a lot of aspects to the same-sex marriage discussion. He said as a Catholic, he aims to show compassion, but still support marriage between a man and woman for the children.

"They bring certain gifts that same sex couples would not, men and women in their gifts and equalities that children are also deserving of," said Hulshof.

He said he believes there is a way for people to still be equal without the Supreme Court redefining marriage.

"When we talk about the rights of individuals, that governments can legislate the rights of that would deal with the dignity of an individual and equality, without redefining marriage," said Hulshof.

Ultimately the issue will be up to the Supreme Court. The justices aren't expected to have a decision until June.
