PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) -

McCracken county deputies say they caught a pair of alleged copper thieves in the act.

Saturday afternoon someone called police to report a couple of air conditioners had been tampered with at the former Raceway Gas Station on Clarks River Road.

Deputies say it appeared someone had cut the copper wiring and disconnected the units with the intention of coming back later to steal them.

Deputies kept a close eye on the area and say around 8 p.m. a vehicle pulled in. The driver turned off the headlights and two men got out of the vehicle. The men reportedly went behind the shuttered gas station and that's when deputies say they caught them in the act of removing copper wiring from the building.

Investigators say when they arrested Martin Walker of Paducah and Joseph Halbert of Oklahoma they found the men to be in possession of tools used to steal copper.

The men now face charges theft and burglary charges. Both are currently being held in the McCracken County Jail.
