2 injured after semi vs. pickup truck crash in Lyon County

LYON COUNTY, KY (KFVS) -

Two people were injured when a tractor-trailer and pickup truck collided in Lyon County on Friday night.

According to Kentucky State Police, it happened on Interstate 24 at the 37 mile marker around 9:10 p.m.

Investigators say a pickup driven by Joseph Cummins, 55, of Princeton, was hauling heavy equipment tires on a trailer in the eastbound right lane. A tractor-trailer driven by David Jones, 61, of Sharon, Tenn. was right behind Cummins.

According to KSP, Jones misjudged the distance when 'closing the gap' and quickly steered into the left lane to avoid Cummins' pickup. But, Jones' tractor-trailer hit Cummins' trailer as he changed lanes.

Jones lost control of the semi and it crossed both lanes and flipped onto its side before sliding up a an embankment off the road.

David Jones and Judith Jones, 73, were both injured and flown to hospitals.

Both eastbound lanes of I-24 were closed as helicopters landed and wreckers moved the semi.

Kentucky State Police was assisted by Lyon County Ambulance, Lyon County Sheriff's Office, Eddyville Fire, Kuttawa Fire, Lyon County Rescue Squad, Ky. Dept. of Transportation and PHI and Air Medical.
