Winners announced in History Day regional contest in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Southeast Missouri State University has announced the winners in the National History Day in Missouri Region 9 contest held today at Southeast Missouri State University.

Erika Woods of Risco, Mo., was awarded first place in the senior individual exhibit with her entry entitled "Ella Baker." She also won a scholarship to Southeast Missouri State University. Beth Bangert of Greenville (Mo.) Junior High won the regional history award and took first place in Junior Individual exhibits for her project, "Turning on the Lights to Rural America."

Malden Schools won the Michael Murphy Sweepstakes Trophy for the most wins.

About 525 area junior high and high school students competed in the regional contest.

Students from Bollinger, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Carter, Dunklin, Iron, Madison, Mississippi, New Madrid, Pemiscot, Perry, Reynolds, Ripley, Scott, St. Francois, Ste. Genevieve, Stoddard, Washington and Wayne counties participated, competing for the chance to advance to the state National History Day competition at the University of Missouri April 20.

Today's contest at Southeast featured 296 entries from 21 schools and was held in the University Center and Carnahan Hall. The theme for History Day 2013 was "Turning Points in History: People, Ideas, Events," and students competed in one of five categories: exhibit, documentary, performance, historical paper or website.
