Attorney: School district changes prom policy on same sex dates

SCOTT COUNTY, MO (KFVS) - Scott County School District officials have changed the policy that would have restricted a senior boy from taking another boy as his prom date.

According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, , earlier this week the school board voted unanimously to repeal this policy.

Senior Stacy Dawson was upset administrators told him he couldn't bring his boyfriend to prom because of what was in the student handbook.

The handbook said girls invite boys, and boys invite girls to school dances.

Dawson teamed up with the civil rights group Southern Poverty Law Center.

The staff attorney sent a letter to the district back in February telling them to change the policy, or face a lawsuit.

"We are happy that the school district has agreed to recognize and support the rights of all students including its LGBT students," said Alesdair Ittelson, staff attorney for the Southern Poverty Law Center. " All students, regardless of whether they are gay or straight, may now attend prom with the date of their choice. Stacy is thrilled that he will be able to take his boyfriend to prom and share the experience with someone he cares for deeply.
