CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -
Work has begun to tear down a 170-year-old Irish handball court in Cape Girardeau.
The court may be 170 years old, and currently sits next to the Southeast Missouri State University River Campus.
The old handball court is part of the old St. Vincent's college that was founded back in 1843.
It is believed to be one of the oldest surviving handball courts in the U.S., and it may be the oldest in the U.S.
Southeast Missouri State University called for a structural evaluation on the handball court.
The Lawrence Group said the wall has a number of structural deficiencies.
There were many cracks and holes in the wall.
Southeast plans to expand the School of Visual and Performing Arts at the River Campus, and construct a new residence hall.
According to the group in charge of the structural evaluation, there may be an effort in the future to save some of the old structure and make an exhibit in one of the new buildings at the River Campus location.
Nip Kelly Equipment and Milam Masonry and Contracting are working together to take down the court.
A manager with Nip Kelly says this will be a process that takes several days.
They started Tuesday and have already taken off the top portion.
They are taking it down by brick at a time.
They also have several bricks assigned to be preserved.
