CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

Members and supporters of the United Way Of Southeast Missouri found a good reason to stay inside Thursday afternoon.

They celebrated a successful fundraising campaign, one that adds up to more than $955,000 and counting. That's more than $5,000 over their goal.

Campaign chair Darrick Johnson talks about the keys to this year's success.

"We went out to try to get some new campaigns and which has been fantastic," said Johnson. "We asked people to give a little bit more this year. With things starting to turn around a little bit, I think people responded to that and I think people recognize the need is still very great. Especially, with the tough times we've had over the last couple of years."

During the celebration, the United Way honored our Stephanie Byars of Heartland News for her hard work organizing the 5KFVS run which celebrates its fifth year in may.
