CHAFFEE, MO (KFVS) -

There is a big, dangerous mess in downtown Chaffee after the upper front level of a historic building collapsed overnight.

The building's owner Pete Dooley says the vacant building once housed his insurance office.

Dooley says he is working to get the rest of the building torn down as soon as possible.

City Administrator Lee Horton offering a warning to onlookers.

"It is a public safety hazard I would urge, it's not a place to hang around and gawk," said Horton. "It's at a dangerous point right now."

Horton says crews will begin checking out the stability of other buildings in Chaffee built around the same time.

The owner of Soap and Suds next door is staying closed for the time being to keep customers safe.
