Fire that killed Springfield man called arson

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) - Springfield police say a man who was found dead after a house fire was shot before the fire was intentionally set.

Police identified the victim Wednesday as 62-year-old Richard Nothnagel.

He was the only person in the home when it burned early Tuesday. The city said in a news release that the fire marshal determined the fire was arson.

KY3-TV reports ( ) that Nothnagel's wife was in a hospital recovering from surgery when the fire occurred.

Firefighters said something kept reigniting the fire and it took several hours to extinguish it.
