A Texas state senator is proposing a bill that would to raise the state legal smoking age 21.

The current age to legally smoke in Texas is 18.

State Senator Carlos Uresti, who authored the bill, says every year 24-thousand Texans die from smoking related illness.

Critics of the bill say putting legislation like this in place would hurt businesses and stunt state revenue.

Uresti admits if the bill were to be enacted, revenue would be lost.

However, the senator also points out the state of Texas spends $5.8 billion every year on healthcare costs related to smoking.
