WASHINGTON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

A man and his 9-year-old son were killed after being hit by a vehicle Friday evening in Washington County, Illinois.

It happened shortly after 8 p.m. on Interstate 64 at the 52 mile marker in Washington County.

Washington County Coroner Mark S. Styninger says Derek Houle, 37, of Bluford and his son Journey Houle, 9, of Mt. Vernon died from their injuries.

Styninger says it appears that an  SUV driven by Derek Houle westbound and slid on "black ice" causing the vehicle to veer off into the center median getting stuck in the mud.

The father and son, and a 12-year-old girl, got out of the SUV, and as they were standing in the median, a westbound vehicle slid on the "black ice" and veered into the median hitting all three.

The 12-year-old was taken to Washington County Hospital and transferred to Cardinal Glennon Hospital in St. Louis with serious injuries.

Derek and Journey Houle were pronounced dead at the scene at 8:53 p.m. by Deputy Coroner Steve Fletcher.

Coroner Mark Styninger says he will be performing toxicology tests on the Derek Houle.

The accident is being investigated by the Coroner's Office, Illinois State Police, Nashville Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff's Department.
