A police officer claims that he was hit by the Johnston City police chief after a verbal altercation.
Court papers show the Williamson County state's attorney is asking a special prosecutor to investigate the alleged battery involving Johnston City Police Chief Vernon Campbell.
According to court papers, Johnston City Police Officer Timothy Patrick, Jr. reported to Illinois State Police that he was involved in a verbal altercation on February 9 that escalated into a physical one. That's when Campbell reportedly hit Patrick.
Patrick wants criminal charges filed against the chief.
State's Attorney Charles R. Garnati believes that could be a conflict of interest prosecuting the case, due to his working relationship with Campbell over the past 25-years.
The petition for a special prosecutor was filed in court on February 28.

Authorities in East St. Louis say a 1-year-old girl was killed when she was run over by a car after a boy inside listening to music started the vehicle and put it into gear.
