CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

It's still chilly, but summer youth sports sign ups are here.

If you put your kid on a team, how do you know who will be the coach? What kind of person are they? Do they have a criminal record?

"I'm signing my son up for baseball," said Kimberlee Reeves.

Reeves is putting her son in his first little league baseball line up.

"I just know that I want my son to be active this summer, and have a fun summer," said Reeves.

But who will be the man or woman to spend all that time coaching her son? What is his or her past?

"It is a concern, I think that people who work with children should all have background checks," said Reeves.

Amy Roth with the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department said they run background checks on all the potential coaches through the Missouri Highway Department and the Missouri Courts database Case Net.

They do see an occasional aunt or uncle, but Roth said for the most part, parents make up the coaching pool.

"On the kids registration form, there's actually a form that the parents can fill out if they're interested in coaching," said Roth.

Whatever the worry, even if it's playing time, Roth said parents can come to them.

"If a parent is concerned with their coach, we definitely recommend them contacting the league director," said Roth.

"My husband and I always try to keep a good eye on him, we're very concerned about making sure we have him within our sights," said Reeves.

Parents like Reeves said they go to all the practices and games to support the team, and watch their child.

"We will be there for every single thing," said Reeves.

"Our parks our filled in the summertime with grandparents, neighbors, friends, parents, watching their little favorite softball player out there on the field," said Roth.

"You want to make sure that the people that are going to be around your kids are responsible people that aren't creeps," said Reeves.

Roth said the Cape leagues are always looking for coaches, so if you want to help with your son or daughter's team, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at www.cityofcapegirardeau.org

You can access the Missouri Highway Patrol website here.

And run a Missouri Courts check at Case Net here.
