Public school officials in Chicago plan to institute some form of sex education for children as young as 5 years old.

According to a FOX News report, Chicago Public Schools will make the curriculum age-appropriate, with the aim at informing students at an earlier age.

Under the lesson plan, children in kindergarten through third grade will learn about their anatomy, all living things that reproduce and appropriate and inappropriate touching, for example.

Fourth graders will focus on puberty and HIV/AIDS. It won't be until after fifth grade - the normal grade level at many U.S. schools - that students will learn about human reproduction, contraception and abstinence.

The proposed policy reportedly follows the National Sexuality Education Standards put together by four health organizations. In addition, CPS would also begin addressing sexual orientation and bullying for the first time.

Of course, this has been met with opposition from parents, believing five is too early of an age to begin sex ed.

"I just don't think it's appropriate," said parent Melissa Diebold. "They have no concept of anything like that at that stage in life."

Another parent believes it's not the district's place to initiate that education to children that young.

"CPS shouldn't take control of someone else's children like that with our sex education," parent Mark Macklan said.

A parent who already began talking to his seven-year-old about sex said that the talk should start at home.

"I do applaud CPS for talking to children early," parent Mikkel Nance said. "The only concern is how they implement it, and if they involved parents in that process."

Sexologist Dr. Rachael Ross noted other countries like The Netherlands begins sex ed at four years old.

"The parents are kind of in denial about what's happening," Ross told FOX News. "In urban populations, the average age that kids start to have sex is between 13 and 14."
