New Madrid man witnesses big NASCAR crash

NEW MADRID, MO (KFVS) -

It was quite the finish at Saturday's Nationwide series in Daytona, Florida.

Big pieces of debris flew into the grandstands during a last lap crash.

Shannon Stanley from New Madrid was there with his dad.

"It was my first time at a Nascar event," said Shannon Stanley.

According to the Associated Press at least 33 NASCAR fans are recovering from injuries they received when a car flew into the fence at Daytona International speedway, hurling a tire and large pieces of debris into the stands.

The accident happened on the last lap of the second-tier Nationwide series race on the eve of Sunday's Daytona 500, which officials say will go on as scheduled.

The crash began as the field approached the checkered flag and leader Regan Smith attempted to block Brad Keselowski to preserve the win.

That triggered a chain reaction, and Rookie Kyle Larson hit the cars in front of him and went airborne into the fence.

"We seen all the cars coming down the stretch towards the finish line, then saw a big cloud of smoke," said Stanley. "The cars came through, then the cars pulled up on the side of the fence then we saw two or three cars with fire coming from under the car."

The entire front end was sheared off Larson's car, and his burning engine wedged through a gaping hole in the fence.

Chunks of debris from the car were thrown into the stands.

No fatalities have been reported so far.

Tony Stewart won the race, but skipped the traditional post-race celebration.

Shannon Stanley said he was attending his first NASCAR race with his father, who won tickets to the Nationwide series and the Daytona 500.
