CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

The Federal Aviation Administration is considering closing more than 100 air traffic control towers at smaller airports nationwide.

Towers in the Heartland could be shut down if no deal is reached in Washington to avert federal spending cuts scheduled to take effect next month.

Those on the list in Missouri, Illinois and Kentucky include:

Missouri

  • Branson – Branson, Mo.
  • Columbia Regional – Columbia, Mo.
  • Jefferson City Memorial – Jefferson City, Mo.
  • Joplin Regional – Joplin, Mo.
  • Rosecrans Memorial – St. Joseph, Mo.

Illinois

  • St. Louis Regional – Alton/St. Louis, Ill.
  • Aurora Tower – Sugar Grove, Ill.
  • Central Illinois Regional at Bloomington-Normal – Bloomington Normal, Ill.
  • Decatur - Decatur, Ill.
  • Dupage West - Chicago, Ill.
  • Southern Illinois - Carbondale/Murphysboro, Ill.
  • Williamson County Regional - Marion, Ill.
  • Springfield Tower - Springfield, Ill.
  • Waukegan Regional - Chicago/Waukegan, Ill.

Kentucky

  • Bowman Tower – Louisville, Ky.
  • Owensboro-Daviess County – Owensboro, Ky.
  • Barkley Regional – Paducah, Ky.

Because of the across-the-board cuts, the FAA is making plans to trim $600 million in spending for the rest of the fiscal year.

In addition, overnight shifts at air traffic control facilities could be scrapped at more airports.
