CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) - Boots and Barkley, Colorado Naturals, Nature's Deli pet foods are being recalled due to salmonella concerns.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Kasel Associates Industries Inc. is recalling all pet treats it manufactured from April 20-Sept. 19, 2012 due to possible contamination with Salmonella.
USDA officials say Kasel has issued three prior recall notices for specific products manufactured during this time. Officials say both people and animals can contract Salmonellosis food poisoning from handling or eating contaminated products.
People handling dry pet treats should thoroughly wash their hands after having contact with the treats as well as any surfaces exposed to these products.
Consumers who have any of these products, or who are unsure of the manufacturing date of their pet treats, should dispose of them in ways that people and animals, including wild animals, cannot access them, for example, a tight fitted garbage can.
The Kasel-manufactured products are sold at various retailers, including Target, Petco, Sam's Club and Costco. Most of the products have a two-year shelf life.
According to the USDA, pets with Salmonella infections may become lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Some pets may experience only a decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected, but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.
If your pet has consumed any of the affected product or is experiencing any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian right away.
