MCCRACKEN COUNY, KY (KFVS) -
Sheriff's deputies say a Kentucky woman was on her cell phone when she crashed her SUV on the interstate Sunday morning.
Around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, the McCracken County Sheriff's Office responded to the 14-mile marker on Interstate-24 for a collision with injuries.
Crash investigators say Jessie Arave, 24, of Gilbertsville was eastbound on I-24 in a 1998 Ford Explorer when the SUV went off the left shoulder of the road and overturned a number of times.
The vehicle came to a rest with the passenger side on the ground.
According to deputies, Arave appeared to have been thrown out of the SUV. Deputies say she was not wearing a seat belt and was on a cell phone at the time of collision.
Both Arave and her SUV were found in the median. She was about 30-feet from the SUV. She was taken to Lourdes E.R. by Mercy EMS. Arave was then flown to Vanderbilt Hospital by PHI Air Medical.
KY Safe Patrol, DES and the Reidland-Farley Fire Department assisted deputies at the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
Due to Arave's injuries, deputies say criminal charges will be brought against her at a later date and time.
According to Deputy Jason Walters, charges are expected to include:
possession of a controlled substance, 2nd degree
possession of marijuana
failure of owner to maintain required insurance, 1st offense
operating on suspended operator's license
Traffic was reduced to one lane for around one- hour.
