CAIRO, IL (KFVS) -
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet kicked off a new study Monday.
It will look at options for improving or replacing the US 51 Ohio River Bridge.
It's also known as the Cairo Bridge located between Wickliffe, Kentucky and Cairo, Illinois.
The 76-year-old bridge was officially deemed functionally obsolete after it failed to meet traffic standards..
One Cairo resident says the bridge feels dangerous, especially when two semis come your way.
Officials say this is just the very first step in a very long process.
They say any new construction projects could be years into the future.
Their options range from repairing the bridge, replacing it, or building a new one at a different location.
