CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO (KFVS) -

The man accused of murdering two people in his apartment complex made his first court appearance Monday.

Prosecutors charged 22-year-old Kenneth bell with the murders of Shannon James and Misty Cole.

He's in the Cape County jail on $2.5 million bond.

Meanwhile, two of Cole's five children remembered the mother they say they dearly miss, and didn't deserve to die.

"I never thought it would happen," said Courtney Maddock, Cole's 17-year-old daughter.

She recalls hearing the news early Friday morning that her mother had been murdered.

"After finding out I didn't know how to feel," said Cole's 19-year-old daughter, Macey Legrand. "I would go to my mom to ask how I'm supposed to feel I don't have her now but I know she's with me."

"We hear gunshots around here all the time," said Maddock. "But to think it was my own mother. It was horrible."

Maddock and Legrand say they were also close to their mother's boyfriend, Shannon James.

"I can only imagine," said Legrand. "I miss Shannon as much as I miss my mom."

Police arrested 22-year-old Kenneth Bell not long after the shooting. Cole's daughters say they didn't know Bell at all.

"I've never heard of him, I've never seen him," said Legrand.

The girls say their mother's life was tough at times, and it's possible drugs were involved. But now, they want to focus on all the things they will always love about her. They say she always motivated them to be better people.

"She loved to make people laugh," said Maddock. "She couldn't stand to see somebody hurt."

"Out of everybody I've met in my life my mom had to be the strongest," said Legrand. "If I was down I went to my mom and she always had wise words for me."

As for Bell they want justice, but Legrand says she isn't angry.

"My grandpa would say he wants the death penalty, my sister would say he can rot but I don't hold any anger towards him," said Legrand. "That young man was obviously going through something."

Now they just wish they had one more chance to tell their mother how wonderful she was.

"If she were here right now I would tell her I love her so much and thank her for everything," said Maddock.

Bell is due back in court March 7. He is charged with two counts of first degree murder and other charges.
