3-year-old shot to death, mom's boyfriend charged

PADUCAH, KY (KFVS) -

Paducah police are investigating the apparent accidental shooting of a 3-year-old child Saturday afternoon at a home in the 1500 block of North 12th Street in Paducah, Kentucky.

Police say they were called to a report of a young male shot.

When a Paducah officer arrived at the home, he found the child lying on his back on the floor with a single gunshot wound.

Officers then performed CPR until an ambulance arrived.

The child was taken to an area hospital, then airlifted to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville.

According to the Paducah Police Department, the child died at 8:30p.m.

Police arrested 21-year-old Nicholas D. Barbee. Officers say Barbee is the mother's boyfriend.

Detective Sgt. Brian Laird said Barbee admitted, after questioning, that he accidentally shot the child.

He has been charged with second-degree manslaughter.

Barbee was booked into the McCracken County Regional Jail.

The child's name is not being released at this time until all family members can be notified.
