JACKSON, MO (KFVS) -

Crews were called to a house fire just outside of the Jackson city limits Sunday afternoon.

The call came in around 2 p.m. for the structure fire at 226 County Road 438 in Cape Girardeau County.

Rod Hurst-Millersville acting fire chief says, there was an elderly man inside the home when fire broke out. He made it outside to safety. Ambulance crews were at the scene as a precaution.

According to Hurst, the fire started in a back bedroom. He says the fire left a lot of smoke damage in the home.

Hurst said crews first had trouble initially getting inside the home due to heavy smoke. However, once inside, the fire was contained to the bedroom.

Crews were putting out fire hot spots afterwards.

Fruitland, Jackson and Millersville Fire Departments were on the scene.

Hurst says the homeowner will stay with relatives.
