SIU may go smoke free

CARBONDALE, IL (KFVS) -

Southern Illinois University may soon go smoke free.

Students and faculty have formed a committee for a smoke-free campus.

Chancellor Rita Cheng says the group approached her about the idea when the University Of Illinois

extinguished all smoking on that campus.

"And the students here saying what about SIU, " said Cheng. "We're an environmentally friendly campus, we're in a beautiful region, why wouldn't we consider that? Well, we're a big campus, we've got a lot of acreage, there's all kinds of issues with enforcement as well as flexibility."

The question may be put to students for a vote.

Cheng says she expects the committee to bring its recommendation on how to implement a campus-wide smoke out by the end of the semester.
