LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A group of women is accused of stealing more than a dozen wallets out of hospitals and doctor's offices, and now, police say, the woman are racking up thousands of dollars in charges.

"They are coming out of the store with shopping carts full of stuff, televisions, everything," said Detective Tony Ford of the St. Matthews Police Department.

The group is believed to be in a 2002 green Ford Windstar with the front passenger tire missing a hubcap.

Ford said the women are targeting female employees. They walk into nurse's stations and offices looking for purses and stealing wallets.

"They are usually in the same group when the thefts are being committed, and an amount of them are in a smaller group when they are out using the credit cards," said Ford.

Ivy Shaffer works at Corbett Cosmetic Surgery inside Norton Suburban Hospital. Earlier this month she became a victim.

"They entered into the back office, past the waiting room," Shaffer said, "and we asked them what they wanted, and they said they were looking for the eye doctor, and they just left."

About four hours later, Shaffer noticed her wallet was missing. At first she didn't make the connection.

"I thought I left my wallet at home," Shaffer said, "but then it occurred to me that my key to my office, I always keep it in my wallet, and I thought I had my wallet when I got here because I opened my office."

Thirty minutes later, the purchases started. "They spent $4,000 on my credit cards and out of my checking account," Shaffer said.

One week later, the group returned, according to Shaffer. "I just couldn't believe it. I just couldn't believe they would be so bold so to come back again."

This time, some of Shaffer's coworkers started to chase after them, but the group was able to get away.

Anyone who recognizes the women should call St. Matthews Police at 502-893-9000.
