4 missing hikers rescued in Shawnee National Forest

JACKSON COUNTY, IL (KFVS) -

Four Southern Illinois University students were rescued after getting lost Saturday in the Shawnee National Forest.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, they got the call shortly before 6 p.m. and responded to Little Grand Canyon.

Deputies say the four hikers called 911 to report they had left the trail and couldn't find their way back to the trial-head.

Deputies and MPS Fire Department found the four females and returned them safely to their vehicle.

The hikers told authorities they started the hike around 3:30 p.m. and became concerned once the sun had set.

No injuries were reported.
