MARION, IL (KFVS) -

The rains from overnight on Saturday continued on Sunday morning, but the rain began freezing midway through the morning.

The rains continued to fall as the sun came up on Sunday morning. But, midway through the morning things became slick in a matter of moments.

"The change over from the rain to the sleet and the freezing rain was pretty quick," said Keith Miley operations engineer for IDOT District 9. "It was a problem for us to get some chemical down ahead of the sleet. So now we've got crews out across the entire sixteen county district."

The changeover caught many drivers off guard too. Several cars sliding off the road and into one another were reported throughout Williamson County.

And the driving conditions could get even worse as we go throughout the evening hours on Sunday.

"I think we're going to see a lot of challenges as soon as the temperatures start to plummet," said Miley. "Any water on the pavement is subject to refreeze. And those are hazardous driving conditions."
