1/11/13 – STEM Education

Watch for ViewPoint segments on KFVS12 normally scheduled to air Mondays near the end of Heartland News at 6:00 & 10:00, and Tuesdays at 6:28 a.m. and near the end of Heartland News At Noon.

You may not be familiar with STEM education but you need to be. The Acronym STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. Those subjects weren't favorites for many of us when we were kids and I fear that may be the same with today's students. And that needs to change.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Statistics, in the next five years, STEM jobs are projected to grow twice as quickly as jobs in other fields. And although all jobs are expected to grow, STEM jobs are expected to increase twice as much. It is estimated that 80% of the jobs in the next decade will require technical skills.

Current research shows that educational opportunities are lacking when it comes to STEM education and that is particularly true for girls and people of color. It's an important issue for the future of our country and our kids. So how can you help? Experience shows that STEM education has more success in our schools when you ask more about it.

There are many partnerships between schools and STEM related businesses that are working well, but there is always a need for more. Contact your school principal and school superintendent if you have a partnership with a STEM related business. And if the answer is no, ask how YOU can help make that a yes! And if you are a business leader, check with your school to see how you can partner. Our future employees and leaders will not just appear out of thin air, we have to create them.
