Illinois Congressman Bill Enyart joined 99 freshmen U.S. congressmen last week as the 113th Congress was seated. This congress has the opportunity to go down in history as one of the most revered and effective bodies to ever occupy both chambers on Capitol Hill. This is not because they are any better, brighter, or more cooperative than the last congress. It is simply because the bar has been lowered that much. The last congress was the least effective congress in the entire history of the United States. Gridlocked by zealots with immovable positions on both sides of the aisle, they passed fewer bills than any congress before them.
Americans are completely disgusted about the recent Congressional mess over the fiscal cliff issues. Our politicians have shown a pathetic lack of cooperation and no desire whatsoever to negotiate with the other party. We should elect people to Congress to work together, to negotiate, and to solve problems-not to cause problems. This last bunch forgot that, focusing too much on keeping their jobs rather than doing their jobs.
With approval ratings slightly north of Attila the Hun, this new congress has nowhere to go but up. With Congresswoman Emerson vacating her seat, Southeast Missourians have an opportunity to nominate and elect a congressman to join this body. Let's find a problem solver for the post.
