MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – Daylight Wednesday shed more light on the damage one tree did to a North Memphis home.

"It looked a mess," said Rebecca Miller.  "Totally a mess."

Rebecca Miller and her son Antoine, a football player at Douglass High already nursing a torn ACL, are now limping along without a permanent home.

"We really don't have nowhere to go," said Miller.  "Really don't have nowhere to stay right now."

Miller rented the home destroyed by the tree.  It also damaged many of the family's belongings.  But like many people, Miller has no renter's insurance.

"All I can do is stay up, pray up, and put it in God's hands," said Miller.  "That's all I can do right now."

"People have a tendency to think the good Lord will take care of them," said insurance agent Rickey Jeans.  "And I have a tendency to think the good Lord gave you five senses to think for yourself."

Jeans said, on average, renter's insurance goes for as little as 20 to 25 bucks a month and covers all kinds of damage.

"So, not only are you protected against loss that you might cause, but you're protecting against loss that might have happened with your neighbors," said Jeans.  "Or mother nature."

Complicating matters in this case is the fact that the homeowner, Ms. Miller's landlord, has no insurance either.  She could not tell us when or if the house might be fixed.  It's kind of like Miller's immediate future.

"I don't know," said Miller.  "I really don't, I just don't know."

Neither renter's nor homeowner's insurance are required under Tennessee law.  However, mortgage companies often require the latter when financing a home.
