COPY-State set to unveil plans to replace old bridge

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky transportation officials are close to announcing plans to replace an 88-year-old bridge that carries traffic across Herrington Lake in central Kentucky.

According to the Lexington Herald-Leader ( ), the state says the bridge is "functionally obsolete" - which means it's too small for modern traffic loads. The steel truss bridge carries traffic on Kentucky 152 across the lake between Garrard and Mercer counties.

The deteriorating, corroded bridge has had residents and state officials concerned for some time.

The state won't say which alternate has been selected. People in the area say they think the state will build a bridge alongside and just north of the existing span.

The federal government has authorized $11 million in funds for the project.

Construction is supposed to start during the 2013-14 fiscal year.
