Owensboro, Kentucky Police have issued a warning about a phone scam involving jury duty.
Officials say the scam involves a caller telling people they missed jury duty and then trying to gain their personal information.
Officials say, in Owensboro, that scam hasn't been an issue, and on Tuesday, police are sending out a warning, hoping to keep it that way.
Officer Michael Hathaway with OPD says the scam involves a caller telling people they failed to show up for jury duty. When the potential victim says they didn't receive a notification about jury duty, the caller tells them they can clear up the issue by providing personal details, like a social security number.
Police say the FBI brought this situation to their attention. They say when you pick up the phone it's important to be aware of who's on the other end.
"The easiest thing to remember is if it's an unsolicited call to you, something that you did not anticipate, don't provide any personal information over the phone. Make sure you know who you're talking to. Try to verify that it's a legitimate phone call," said OPD Officer Michael Hathaway.
Officials say real jury duty notifications are handled by mail.
