HARRISBURG, IL (KFVS) -
The Egyptian Health Department held its first Electronics Recycling Day on Saturday, October 27.
The event was held in Harrisburg and individuals and businesses were encouraged to drop off electronics that they no longer used to be recycled.
A landfill ban on 17 electronic items was introduced by the Illinois State Legislature earlier this year. The banned electronic items included TV's, computers, laptops, monitors, printers and many other items common in nearly every home. With limited options for disposal of these items by homeowners, some were being dumped in ditches and illegal landfills.
The health department had worked with a local agency to set up an electronic recycling collection center, but those efforts fell through earlier this year. It was then the health department decided to hold electronics recycling events in their three counties of Saline, Gallatin and White to fill the need of residents to dispose of these items. At this first event enough items were dropped off to fill two semi-trailers. The items were then taken by Vintage-tech Recyclers of Romeoville, Ill.
In 2013, Egyptian Health Department plans to hold Electronics Recycling Days in both White and Gallatin Counties. Dates are yet to be determined.
If you have questions, you can contact Dan January at Egyptian Health Department at 618-273-3326 ext. 2712.
