Pastor charged with stealing from charity

Posted: Updated:

DRUMMONDS, TN - (WMC-TV) – Allen Brown's name is still on the sign at Victory Baptist Church in Drummonds, Tennessee.  Most people there haven't really had time to lose faith in the pastor who's accused of breaking at least one of the 10 commandments.

"What?" asked neighbor Pam Adkins.

Brown was booked into the Tipton County Jail Wednesday following his arrest on multiple theft charges.

"I had no idea, no idea," said Adkins.  "For one thing, he's a minister, a worker of Christ, and you don't expect things like that."

Brown is accused of stealing money while working for the now-defunct non-profit Tipton Cares.  A joint investigation between local police and the TBI revealed Brown allegedly opened a personal credit card in the charity's name and transferred a CD from its account to his own.

The pastor is also accused of giving a truck donated to Tipton Cares to a member of his own family.

"Tipton Cares was for the community," said Brighton PD Investigator Craig Pifer.  "For people who needed help in the community. And he basically took that and used it for his own needs and not the community's needs."

Investigators say Brown pilfered from the non-profit between 2008 and 2011 and was finally arrested following a grand jury's recent indictment.

"I will be definitely praying for him," said Pam Adkins.  "He is in my prayers."

Brown once worked for the Tipton County Sheriff's Office as well.  He was let go soon after the investigation began.
